Our school, Woodland Elementary, is located in the scenic town of Dildo, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland which is approximately 100 kilometers from the capital city of St. John's. Our students come from the communities of Blaketown, Broad Cove, New Harbour, Old Shop, and South Dildo.

We are a K-6 school which offers a variety of extracurricular activities to our students because we believe in the education of the whole child. We are also dedicated to creating a safe, healthy and positive environment for teaching and learning for all of our children and staff.

Easter Break:

Today is the last day before Easter break! We will return to school on Monday, April 12th.

Active Outdoors Challenge:

We need your help with this ‘Active Outdoors Challenge’! Active Schools (NLESD) is partnering with SSNL and Parks Canada to launch this incredible challenge for the month of April. The challenge is open to students, staff and families. Each class will enter the challenge, as a group. All you have to do is keep track of the minutes per day for outdoors physical activity and let your child’s teacher know the minutes. Our school could win cross country skis, snowshoes, and other great prize packs! Let’s get outside and get physical!!

Morning Kiss and Ride:

This is a reminder that if you are dropping off your child, in the morning, you are to await your turn in the line-up. Leaving the line to wrap around and drop off a child on the way out is not permitted. This is causing a safety concern for drivers and for students.

Kinderstart Parent Orientaion:

There will be a virtual Parent Orientation session for kinderstart parents on April 16th. However, this is a regular school day for our current kindergartens.

Harbour Breeze:

Our cafeteria and canteen service will begin on Monday, April 19th. Therefore, all students will need to bring along a packed recess and lunch from Monday, April 12th to Friday April 16th.

Mental Wellness Tip:

Tips to Help with An Anxiety Attack

- Look around you.

- Find five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.

This is called ‘grounding’. It can help when you feel like you have lost all control of your surroundings.

Happy Easter from the students and staff of Woodland Elementary!

Re: Update

Good Morning Families,

As you know, we are living in very uncertain times right now. I know there is a lot of anxiety in both adults and children. We have a lot of our students staying home out of an abundance of caution and we certainly respect that decision. I do ask, however, if you haven’t already contacted your child’s teacher or the office to inform us of this decision then please do so for our records.

However, please know that at this point in time, we are not one of the schools that are in Scenario 3, which means the school would be in full virtual learning. Therefore, our school has not been directed by NLESD to provide online learning for students. We are still an in-class learning school. Any work that is missed during your child’s absence will be addressed upon returning or we move to virtual learning as a school. In the meantime, please continue to focus on literacy and numeracy skills as they are the foundation of all learning.

In an attempt to prepare our students for possible on-line learning (Scenario 3), all teachers have Google Classrooms developed and your child has been granted access. They have been practicing logging on and completing on-line tasks with their teachers. Please encourage your child to continue to practice logging into their Google Classrooms in case we move to total on-line learning in the near future. The decision to move from in-class instruction to on-line instruction is determined by NLESD.

As per district guidelines, we have suspended all co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. I would like to reassure you that we have not mixed our cohorts in any co-curricular or extra-curricular activities since September. In addition, our school has deep cleaning completed each evening by our evening and night caretakers. When the weather is appropriate, Phys. Ed classes will be given outside. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for winter weather. In addition, as of Monday, there will be no ‘Grab and Go’ breakfast program. Therefore, please ensure your child has breakfast before leaving for school in the mornings.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or myself by email or by phoning the school. Please stay safe!

Re: School Reopening

Hello Families;

We are eagerly preparing for our students' arrival on Thursday morning. We are very grateful to hear of the low number of cases reported daily and hoping the trend continues. I want to take this time to reassure you that we are taking the Chief Medical Officer's guidelines very seriously. It is impossible to outline all the protocols that are in place and have been since September, but I will just highlight a few that you may be wondering about.

1. Masks are to be worn on the bus at all times and buses are offloaded one bus at a time to allow for less congestion in the hallways upon arrival. There will be a change of routine at dismissal time. Starting on Thursday, our cohorts will be dismissed, one at a time, beginning with Grade 6. This includes our students who walk. The teacher will lead the students out and our students who get picked up will be at the end of the line. Parents/guardians will need to go to the teacher to get your child(ren) when they enter the parking lot.

2. Grades 4-6 students must wear a mask throughout the school day and K-3 students are encouraged to also, but it is not mandatory. However, masks in K-3 must be worn upon leaving the classrooms (which was in place since September).

3. Phys. Ed. classes will be delivered outside, whenever the weather is suitable. Therefore, all students MUST come to school prepared for outside play each day. Masks do not need to be worn while outside. Masks can be taken off during inside Phys. Ed classes.

4. The district is not supplying schools with children’s masks, therefore, please send along an extra mask with your child on a daily basis.

5. Students will need a water bottle each day, as in September, since the water fountain is only used for water fill ups. We do not have a supply of water bottles to give out, therefore, it is important that each child has their own water bottle with their name on it.

6. There will be no combining of classes (cohorts) during the school day (this is not a change). Recess and lunch will be eaten in the classroom and students will not be permitted to wander around the hallways during break times.

For Your Information

- Harbour Breeze has decided not to deliver canteen and lunch services until after Easter break. Therefore, students will need to bring along a packed recess and lunch until we break for Easter.

- Kinderstart was scheduled for March 19th. However, that is now postponed and both kindergarten and kinderstart parents/guardians will be notified as to the new date and details once it becomes available. Therefore, there will be regular classes for our kindergarten students this Friday.

- Our ‘Grab and Go’ breakfast program will begin on Monday, March 22nd. Please ensure your child has breakfast before coming to school on Thursday and Friday.

- Report cards will be distributed on Monday, March 22nd. Parent Conferences will be held on Wednesday, March 24th. Students will be dismissed at 12:00 p.m. Further details will follow.

- Students are reminded to bring all their school supplies (whatever was sent home) on Thursday. Please have a look at your child’s school supplies such as pencils, glue, erasers, crayons/leads, etc. to determine if they need to be replenished. Students will need their inside footwear, if they are not already at school.

- Devices will need to be returned next week. A letter will be sent home on Friday with the details for returning.
